Your toothbrush will never be sterile, because no matter the environment it is kept in, microorganisms will settle on it.
However, there are hygienic ways to store your toothbrush – these include toothbrush holders.
In this week’s blog from the Dental Center 4Smile, learn how to choose a good toothbrush holder and where to place it to maximize your oral hygiene.
Toothbrush holders not only help keep your bathroom organized, but also ensure your oral hygiene is at its best.
Toothbrush holders come in a variety of sizes, materials, and styles, but the main priority should be how hygienic they are.
The simplest models will keep your toothbrush upright when stored.
Storing it this way allows the brush to dry between uses, which helps prevent bacteria.
If you use an open toothbrush holder, it is advisable to use a toothbrush head cover, but only after the brush has dried.
HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER?
Easy to clean
According to research, toothbrush holders are the third most bacteria-contaminated place in the home.
A toothbrush holder should keep your toothbrush upright.
This helps the toothbrush dry quickly between uses and reduces bacteria buildup.
It is recommended to choose a toothbrush holder made from non-rusting, easy-to-clean materials.
These include porcelain, bamboo, or stainless steel.
It is very important to clean your toothbrush holder regularly to prevent bacteria and mold.
The recommended cleaning method is to wipe the surface with white vinegar diluted in water, avoiding the use of harsh bleach-based solutions.
Has enough storage capacity
Make sure the toothbrush holder has enough space between compartments.
This will prevent toothbrushes from touching each other, which helps avoid the spread of bacteria and allows brushes to dry properly.

Wall-mountable
Wall-mounted models are a better solution because they keep the countertop clean and allow for better air circulation, helping the toothbrush stay dry.
Choose wall-mounted toothbrush holders that cover the toothbrush head, as these are more hygienic — especially useful if your bathroom has limited space.
One of the most sanitary options is a wall-mounted holder with built-in UV light for disinfection.
Studies have shown that ultraviolet disinfection light helps reduce bacteria and organisms on your toothbrush.

Travel toothbrush holders
Even when traveling, it’s important to store your toothbrush in hygienic conditions.
Although you won’t have the same storage freedom as at home, you should always pack your toothbrush in a proper case.
Avoid storing your toothbrush in a zip-lock plastic bag, as it can encourage bacterial growth!

WHERE TO PLACE YOUR TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER?
It’s best to avoid placing it near the toilet, especially if it’s an open-type holder without a head cover.
Keeping your toothbrush exposed in the bathroom can subject it to “toilet plume”.
Toilet plume is an aerosol cloud of microscopic particles containing urine and feces, which spreads into the air and onto surrounding surfaces when you flush.
If your toothbrush is near the toilet, the chances of it being sprayed by this plume are high.
Placing the holder inside small bathroom cabinets is also not very hygienic.
Small, enclosed cabinets create a humid environment, which can promote the growth of pathogens, as moisture encourages microbial development.
HOW TO STORE AN ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH?
Electric toothbrushes are a more practical and efficient solution for oral hygiene, but they also need to be stored hygienically.
Some holders made for regular toothbrushes are not suitable for electric ones, so it’s crucial to consider where you store them.
Avoid closed cabinets and areas near the toilet.
Since there are fewer holder options for electric brushes, it’s best to get a toothbrush head cover that you place after it has dried.

Choosing a good toothbrush holder will help you maintain good oral health and prevent infections caused by bacteria buildup.
Along with keeping your toothbrush holder clean, don’t forget to:
– Thoroughly rinse off toothpaste residue from your toothbrush after each use
– Replace your toothbrush (or electric toothbrush head) every 3 months
– Replace your toothbrush after any illness
And finally, don’t forget to visit your dentist every 6 months!
