Frequently asked questions by patients
Most common patient questions about dental implants, dental crowns, and dental therapy
When a patient decides to take the first step toward a healthier and more beautiful smile, they almost always bring along a lot of questions. Whether it involves placing dental implants, making crowns, bridges, veneers, or a complete smile reconstruction, it is only natural to want to know what to expect.
At Dental Center 4Smile in Zagreb, we believe that high-quality communication is just as important as the treatment itself. That is why during the initial examination, we thoroughly analyze the condition of the oral cavity, create a treatment plan, and answer all questions patients may have.
However, it often happens that we hear the same questions again during the course of treatment. This is completely normal. When faced with a large amount of new information, it isn’t always easy to remember everything at once. That is why it is never a problem for us to explain each step of the treatment multiple times and answer the same questions again.
Here are the answers to the questions our patients ask most frequently.
How long does dental treatment take?
The duration of treatment depends on the type of procedure being performed and the initial condition of the teeth, gums, and bone.
For instance, making individual crowns or smaller prosthetic work can be completed in a few weeks. On the other hand, more complex therapies involving tooth extractions, bone regeneration, and dental implant placement can take several months.
During the first examination, every patient receives an individualized treatment plan and an estimated timeframe for the treatment.
When will I be finished?
One of the most common questions we hear is: “Doctor, when will I finally be done?”
The exact completion date depends on several factors: the type of procedure, the healing process, the number of implants, your body’s individual response, and your availability for appointments.
Our goal is always to provide a realistic estimate so the patient knows what to expect throughout the treatment process.
Will I be without teeth during the treatment?
This is perhaps patients’ biggest fear before starting treatment.
The good news is that in most cases, you will not be left without teeth. After a tooth extraction or during the process of crafting the final restoration, patients receive temporary teeth or temporary prosthetic appliances.
This means that during treatment, you can communicate, work, socialize, and carry out daily activities normally without feeling uncomfortable.
Can I eat normally with temporary teeth?
Yes, but with certain precautions.
Temporary teeth allow for normal function during treatment, but they are not designed for heavy loads. We recommend avoiding extremely hard foods such as ice, hard candies, nuts, or very hard bread crusts.
By following these instructions, temporary restorations can serve their purpose without issue until the treatment is complete.
Can I eat normally with my new teeth?
Returning to normal chewing function is precisely one of the main reasons patients opt for treatment.
After completing treatment and following a brief adaptation period, most patients can once again enjoy foods they were unable to eat for years due to missing teeth, loose dentures, or other issues.
Of course, just as with natural teeth, we recommend avoiding habits like biting ice or using your teeth to open packaging.
How do I maintain implants, crowns, and bridges?
Many patients think that artificial teeth do not require special care. The truth is quite the opposite.
Although implants cannot get cavities, the surrounding tissue and bone must remain healthy for the implant to stay stable for many years.
Therefore, we recommend:
- Regular toothbrushing at least twice a day
- Using interdental brushes
- Using dental floss where possible
- Using an oral irrigator (water flosser), especially for implants, bridges, and larger prosthetic restorations
- Regular professional check-ups and tartar removal
Quality oral hygiene is one of the most important factors in the longevity of any dental work.
Am I allowed to smoke after dental implant placement?
Smoking significantly increases the risk of complications after implant placement.
Nicotine reduces blood flow to the tissue, slows down healing, and can negatively affect the osseointegration process-the fusion of the implant with the bone.
Ideally, you should stop smoking a few days before the procedure and avoid smoking throughout the healing period. The longer you manage to abstain from smoking, the higher the chances of a successful treatment outcome.
What is the warranty on dental work?
Patients often ask what happens after treatment is completed and whether there is a warranty on the work.
Dental Center 4Smile provides a warranty on prosthetic work, provided the patient adheres to the doctor’s recommendations, maintains oral hygiene, and attends regular check-ups.
Crowns and bridges carry a warranty of up to 5 years, ceramic veneers 3 years, while the manufacturers of the implant systems we use provide a lifetime warranty on the implant itself and a multi-year warranty on the associated components.
It is important to note that the warranty is void in cases of non-compliance with instructions, neglect of oral hygiene, or failure to attend regular check-ups.
How often do I need to come for check-ups?
Follow-up examinations are just as important as the treatment itself.
In most cases, we recommend visits every six months, but for patients with implants, periodontal issues, or more complex prosthetic work, check-ups may be more frequent.
Regular visits allow us to identify and address minor issues in a timely manner before they become serious.
There is no such thing as an unimportant question
If there is one thing we want our patients to remember, it is that there are no unimportant questions.
Whether you are asking how long the treatment takes, if you will be without teeth, if you can eat with temporary teeth, or if you have already asked the same question several times, we are always happy to answer.
An informed patient is a confident patient, and that feeling of security is one of the foundations of successful dental treatment.
